The Footscray Asian Businesses Association was founded in 1990 to represent the interests of the increasing numbers of traders from the Far East that were revitalising and developing Footscray. We needed to ensure that we contributed to the development of our thriving, multicultural city and fully participated in decisions that concerned us.
FABA not only represents the interests of business-people but also community leaders. With our very close involvement with the Vietnamese Community in the Maribyrnong City Council and other community groups, we help to represent the interests of cultural groups and community organisations as well. Approximately 1/3 of the 65,000 people in Maribyrnong were born in the Far East or are the children of parents from there. Footscray also attracts large numbers of customers and visitors from all different cultural backgrounds who come to shop, to eat, and to join our rich cultural life.
Over the years, FABA has become by far the largest business organisation in Footscray, with the vast majority of traders of Far Eastern origin in Footscray being members. We are an integral part of Footscray and a key driver of development, growth and change.
